The second appointment of the BiblioMANia cycle will be held on Thursday 22 September at 6.30 pm.
Elisabetta Masala, curator of the MAN, will dialogue with Sabrina Melis, artist and author of Timber Union, artist’s book in 200 copies, which draws inspiration from an archive of technical tables belonging to the School of drawing applied to arts and industries, a male institute active in the Friulian municipality of Sutrio from the end of the nineteenth century to 1966.
Within the circuit of professional training schools, Friuli Venezia Giulia stood out for the variety of specializations and the excellence of its production. The small municipality of Sutrio still preserves around 3500 drawings made by students, among which hundreds of tables emerge for the study of wood joints, entitled “union of wood”. Finely designed during the two hours of evening school, they served as functional preparatory materials for carrying out the practical part of the woodworking course. The artist and designer Sabrina Melis starts from the study of these drawings, collecting and reworking a selection of projects for interlocking shapes. In this way, he restores the value of uniqueness to the anonymous studies, elevating them to testimony of the period that transformed the figure of the carpenter into a specialized craftsman.
The project was born in 2020 during the participation of Sabrina Melis in the first edition of “Una Boccata d’Arte”, a contemporary art project spread throughout Italy promoted by the Elpis Foundation in collaboration with Galleria Continua, which enhances the encounter between art and historical, artistic and landscape heritage of the area.
