20 Dec 2024

On January 10, 2025, at 6 PM, MAN will host the screening of the documentary After the Last Image, directed by Alessandra Tocco.

The 20-minute film chronicles the key phases of the creative process behind After the Last Image by Luca Spano, curated by Elisabetta Masala. This captivating journey offers a behind-the-scenes look at the project.

The screening will feature a conversation with the artist, the film director, and the curator.

After the Last Image by Luca Spano is a photographic and installation-based exploration on the threshold of visibility, probing the mystery inherent in the realm of the unseen. It examines the liminal boundaries that separate and unite the known and the unknown, highlighting their latent potential for revelation.

Alessandra Tocco’s keen perspective provides a valuable reflection on the intricate creative process, which developed through research residencies, interdisciplinary collaborations, and dialogues intertwining art, science, and philosophy.

The documentary takes viewers through the various spaces that Luca Spano traversed during the eleven months of the project: his home and studio in Cagliari, the book-filled halls of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence, the storage rooms of optical instruments at the Deutsches Optisches Museum in Jena, and the classrooms of the DIST at the Polytechnic University of Turin.

Above all, it highlights the people who made this process possible: anthropologist Massimo Canevacci, researchers from the DIST – Caterina Pozzobon, Luca Bertocci, and Marco Santangelo – who were key interlocutors in shaping the project’s geographies; carpenter Pietro Fois; artisans Vittorio and Andrea Bruno of BAM Design; musicians Giacomo Salis and Stefano Manconi; and the MAN’s staff.

Director Alessandra Tocco delves deeply into the artist’s creative process, giving voice to the multitude of influences and inspirations that accumulated over days, weeks, and months of work. She brings to light the invisible presences that inhabit the project, unraveling the mysteries of Luca Spano’s work – mysteries that reflect the essence of life itself.

After the Last Image is a project that won the Strategia Fotografia 2022 grant, promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.
