On October 22 at 6:00 PM, MAN Director Chiara Gatti, curator Gabi Scardi, and artist Micol Roubini will present the book La montagna magica.
Gathering a variety of documents, the project tells the story of the post-industrial development of the Corio and Balangero area, where Europe’s largest asbestos mine once stood, now decommissioned.
Micol Roubini draws on the memories and dreams of the area’s inhabitants, outlining the history of asbestos—a mineral considered miraculous since ancient times, widely used in daily life throughout the last century, but now recognized as lethal, though still in use in many countries around the world. Curated by Gabi Scardi, the publication, edited by NERO Editions, includes contributions from Giovanni Aloi, Francesco Carnevale, Elke Krasny, Gabi Scardi, Riccardo Venturi, and Fabrizio Zandonatti.
The project was realized with the support of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities as part of the Italian Council program (11th edition, 2022). It was promoted and produced by Lo schermo dell’arte, with contributions from nctm e l’arte and L’Altauro.
