"Altri sensi" is the title of Laura Pugno’s exhibition at MAN scheduled for September 13.

Laura Pugno  was born in  Trivero in 1975. Her artistic research focuses on the investigation of landscape not as a natural element or as a still image of a more-or-less extended portion of reality but as a social construct, a cultural and ideological superstructure. The exhibition, along with an ample selection of pieces from the past five years, presents a new series of works dedicated to Supramonte, an  interior region on the island of Sardinia  This choice -  by highlighting the unreliability of any predetermined idea of landscape and in particular of Sardinia and  of an idea largely built around a stereotype of natural (sea, sun, transparencies ) and social (peace, welfare, fun) elements - reaffirms the need for multiple points of view in order to pursue a complex vision of the world that is closer to the multifaceted dynamics that govern it. Her new work is characterized by the abrasion of photographic prints already experimented by the artist in the Esitando series (2011) in which the landscape of the mountainous regions in Piedmont is revealed as a unitary subject that “has its own boundaries that separate it from the surrounding environment."

In these works - as well as in the group entitled Quel che Annibale non vide (2012), a series of five erasures directed not only at loosening the integrative ties of landscape but more specifically at the liberation of the single parts - what emerges is an attempt to point out the integration of the physical and cultural elements that make up the landscape through the partial annulment of those very elements. The artist distances herself from a traditionally understood vision  and, in more recent works, suggests a possible tactile perception of the landscape. So in Didascalie n. 5 (2013) and Taccuini di viaggio (2013), presented to the public for the first time in this show, the extensive use of Braille evokes a vision that can involve senses other than the visual.

Along with paintings from the KWh series (2008) - evidence of the origins of Laura Pugno’s pictorial work - and the group collage Percorrenze (2010) in which the idea of landscape is brought to a radical synthesis of line and color,  the show also includes the project, Paesaggio di spalle, an installation of drawings on plexiglass made by turning away from the portion of the scene depicted on the plate. Completing the exhibition are two recent fixed-camera videos: Sillogismo (2013), in which the natural and unnatural merge into a single integrated view, and Meccanismi di difesa (2012), in which the rapid succession of shadows on a mountain ridge reveals the unreliability of the single point of view.

The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue (Italian/English) published by NERO with texts by Cecilia Canziani, Gian Antonio Gilli and Lorenzo Giusti.
