Civil Servants

Artistic research and environmental issues in Sardinia

06.02  -  10.05.2015
Opening: Inauguration: Friday 6 February, 7 pm

The “Civil Servants” project, curated by Micaela Deiana, develops from recognition of artistic practices of an antagonistic nature in Sardinia, aimed at formulating models for analysis, deconstruction and problem-solving in the present-day social and political context. In this rich context, on the ridge between activism and artistic research, the exhibition concentrates in particular on the investigations which, in the last few years, have raised important environmental issues, fundamental for the island's future.

The expression “Civil Servant” belongs to Anglo-Saxon culture and indicates the deep-rooted civic sense with which state officials perform their duties to the community of which they are a part. The artists selected make this attitude a key element in their poetics, creating works, but especially actions, in which art becomes the instrument of social criticism to raise awareness of the value of the common good.

Through the narrations of Leonardo Boscani, Riccardo Fadda, Pasquale Bassu and Eleonora Di Marino, the exhibition deals especially with the effects of the occupation and exploitation of the land by the industrial estates that characterized the so-called “Sardinian industrial rebirth” in the 1960s and 70s, and the critical instruments with which today attempts are being made to remedy the political and economic failure of this development strategy and set out along the difficult road to reconversion.
